はじめに
工業化の意味を誤解している学生を多く見かけます。工学技術の革新により、経済の仕組みが製造業の機械化と大量生産体制に依存するようになる歴史的経緯を示す用語と考えられがちですが、西洋経済史の文脈に沿って工業化について理解するためには、そのような認識では狭すぎます。確かに西洋経済史の特徴は、高度有機経済の発展の帰結に産業革命が起こるという筋書きにありますが、機械制工業の時代よりも何世紀も前から工業生産が伸びていたことがわかっているからです。
むろん家内工業の存在は広く知られています。しかし、肝心なのは、その生産体制が国際競争に晒されながら海外市場向けに成立していた点です。この点が、ヨーロッパ以外の地域でも見られる家内工業とは異なるからです。【参照】 プロト工業化
